The Biking Viking’s Rode Again on the 1st/ 2nd November
This year the riders set out from Silverstone on the 1st November after a quick photo at the start. The day was sunnier than anticipated but initially the ride was muddier than expected (it was great when I checked it in July – honest) but after we reached the Grand Union canal at Blisworth we made good time through Northampton and around Pitsford Water for lunch at the White Swan in Holcot.
After lunch we were plagued with punctures with Iain McKinlay managing 3 in about 3 miles!! Eventually as it was getting dark the 23 riders made their way through Corby to our hotel.
If Saturday’s weather was better than expected Sunday dawned wet and miserable as Foston Pete turned up. After a sustaining breakfast (?) we made our way from Corby past Rockingham Motor Speedway and through the Welland Valley with the stunning viaduct hidden in the rain.
After the weather cleared and a tea stop at Rutland water, including a wheel change for Mark Cant, we pressed on to Buckminster for a revitalising pie stop and then back off the road to the Dirty Duck and a final pint with Bob in charge.
After a final photo and regroup at the Saltwell the riders all arrived home to a fantastic welcome in the village and of course the Viking stew at the pub!!
Thank you to everyone for your support again this year – currently we have raised £4740.00 for BBC Children in Need.
A big thank you from all the riders to those that supported and sponsored the ride, especially Foston Pete for his help with the route (I told him that bit would be muddy!), Heather, Kurt, Jay and Andy on back up, Geoff Horsfall, Martin for all his help, Vickie and Caron on pies and finally Matt and all at the Welby Arms.
Not forgetting Kev Green’s encouragement from the back up van!
The Biking Vikings will ride again next year…..
