SYNTAX – Onwards and upwards!

The date was Wednesday January 19th 2011. Syntax (without a name at this stage!) came into being and as we move into our third year it seems that the concept was the right thing at the right time with attendance averaging sixteen on every third Wednesday of the month. I say ‘attendance’ since there is no membership list or membership fees or indeed, any obligation to turn up.

Most of those who do so are present simply because of a shared love of literature in all its forms and come to read a piece of poetry, a small article or passage from a book –(be it humorous, serious or thought provoking), or simply to come and listen.

As last year there is much planned for 2013 as well as the monthly readings. A published poet (David Lightfoot) is our guest speaker in March and in August the author Karen Maitland will be coming to talk to us about her books.
July will see us at Tolethorpe Hall to see ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ performed by the Stamford Shakespeare Company, and in June there are plans to hold an ‘Open Evening’ (of which more details will be advertised around the village). This will take the form of one of your favourite poems being read by members of the group on your behalf. Perhaps you can’t remember the title or can recall only a line or a few words but if it once meant a lot to you – let us know, we’ll do the research and you can just sit back and listen.

Better still…come and join us on March 20th and hear David Lightfoot read some of the terrific poems he’s written in his long career. If you want to know more about us or want an evening out that’s a little bit different and where you’ll feel hugely welcome, telephone Peter on 281084.
