Jubilee Music Quiz and BBQ

Do you know your Steely Dan from your Steeleye Span? If you do the Jubilee music quiz might be right up your street. Even if you don’t you’ll find something to enjoy in a quiz that will provide challenging questions from the last 60 years of musical history. It takes place in the courtyard (with some marquee cover) at the rear of the Welby on Friday 1st June and kicks off Allington’s Jubilee celebrations. The quiz will start at 8.00pm and if you are feeling peckish the pub will be providing a bbq from 6pm onwards. We require teams of not more than 5 people. Each person will be asked to make a donation of £1 which will form a cash prize with the winner taking all.

Community Led Plan

Some time ago the Community Led Plan (CLP) steering group undertook a village survey to help shape the future of the village. The response was impressive and the analysis of the raw data represented a huge challenge. The steering group has produced an initial analysis document which was originally intended to inform a further process of consultation via community meetings. It was also hoped to refine the document to identify the ideas which were not only popular, but achievable too. Mel Cant has been leading the steering group and has put a lot of effort into the creation of the analysis document. You can download a copy using the link below.

The steering group is keen to make progress but is being held back by the lack of volunteer time available. If you look at the document you will see what a substantial piece of work the survey led to. We now need further assistance to take it forward with some extra analysis and general help. Please use the comments box below to give us some feedback on the document or to let us know if you would like to help take the plan forward.

The Big Jubilee Lunch

Come and join the party for a grand Diamond Jubilee celebratory lunch in the marquee at the village playing field. In addition to the food you’ll find balloons, stickers, music and a licensed bar. The lunch costs £3 per person. The event is being organised by Alllington W.I. and is generously supported by the Big Lottery Fund. In order to accommodate everyone involved in other Jubilee activities there will be three sittings.

First sitting: 12.30 – 1.15
Second sitting: 1.30 – 2.15
Third sitting 2.30 onwards

The menu comprises all home made and home cooked food.

Main Course

Braised beef with vegetables and new potatoes
Cold sliced home cooked ham, coleslaw, green salad and new potatoes
A vegetarian alternative will also be available

Desserts

Mixed fruit pies – lemon drizzle cake – jellies(four varieties) all served with a choice of custard, cream or ice cream.

Tickets will be available at Allington Village Stores.

Everyone is welcome and we hope you will want to join with friends for an enjoyable lunch and perhaps celebrate with a jug of Pimms or bottle of wine from the bar.

Race Night 12 May

Superfast Broadband – You Can Help

Allington’s broadband is atrocious. If we had decent provision we could take advantage of new media services such as Netflix, use the BBC iPlayer whenever we wanted and watch You Tube videos without waiting for them to download. Good speeds would allow everyone in a family to connect to the internet simultaneously and people would be more confident about working from home. New tele-health services are being developed and it is almost impossible to predict the nature of online services that will appear in the near future. What can be predicted is the impossibility of accessing any of these services in Allington unless something is done to improve the current broadband speeds.

Next year will see the roll out of new superfast broadband right across the UK. In Lincolnshire contracts worth £53m will be let later this year. The new services will provide speeds in excess of 24mb/s downstream which is nearly 50 times faster than the current speeds found in Allington. So will we get the new service? The answer isn’t yet known. It is anticipated that the £53m will provide for 90% of Lincolnshire’s population. The remaining 10% are promised a minimum speed of 2mb/s. All of this has to be achieved by May 2015. The 90/10 split will only be determined when the contracts are let. The companies bidding will have to weigh up a range of factors in order to decide where they can spend the money to greatest effect. One of these factors is likely to be the number of people that have registered an interest in superfast broadband. You do that at www.onlincolnshire.org. When you get there you’ll find as big “register your interest” button at the top of the home page. Registering does not commit you to anything. It is in everyone’s interest to get these services into the village, whether it be for the new services, your child’s education or to maintain the value of your property. Can I therefore urge everyone to visit Onlincolnshire and register. The site provides lots of information about broadband and once registered you can access the forums which are well worth a visit. Allington currently has 24 registrations. I’ll keep an eye on the numbers and provide an update when they start to rise!

FAB4 to Headline Jubilee Finale

Lark in the Park returns for 2012 with a special Jubilee edition. We have a stunning line-up with live music from the The FAB4 and Partybeat. All the entertainment takes place inside a huge marquee and we are able to offer admission at the very special price of £10 per head payable at the gate. Moreover we are providing free admission for all under 18′s accompanied by parents or guardians.There will be a disco, licensed bar and hot food. A spectacular Jubilee fireworks display and lighting of the Jubilee beacon will provide the evening’s finale. Lark in the Park will be a fitting end to one of the busiest and best weekends in Allington’s history.

Partybeat are a tremendous live band providing covers from the 60′s to the present day. They play with energy and verve and from the moment they take the stage the audience will be on its feet.

The FAB4 have real pedigree. They are one of the world’s best Beatles cover bands and never fail to bring the house down. Here’s someone who should know what he’s talking about.

“Since my first Beatles Convention appearance in 1984, I have seen and heard hundreds of Beatles tribute groups. Some of them have been very, very good, but none have surpassed the FAB4. There is a passion in their playing which reminds me of ”the boys”, something which is missing from so many tribute groups. I have worked with THE FAB4 on a number of occasions and hope to do so again in the future. Why? Because they are the best!”

We have recently been contacted by Sonia Wooding in Wanganui, New Zealand, who is doing some research on her husband’s ancestors. Sonia writes “Were there any large houses in the area who would have employed a coachman in the 1850s? My husband’s ancestor, Thomas Hardcastle, was one and lived in West Allington with his young family. I was interested to know for whom & where he might have been employed.”

Diamond Jubilee Takes Shape

Plans for Allington’s Jubilee celebrations over the weekend of June 1^st/ 2^nd/ 3^rd/4^th are now at an advanced stage. A broad range of local organisations have come together to deliver a programme of events that should provide something for everyone. The preliminary schedule is listed below. Only two of the events (Big Lunch and Lark in the Park) have to be paid for and very soon we will publish details of prices and how you can get your hands on some tickets. All activities at the playing field will benefit from the cover of a huge marquee. Very shortly there will be lots more information available . We hope that everyone in the village will want to take part and you are more than welcome to invite friends and family to what is going to be a weekend to remember.

Village Hall AGM

The village hall AGM will be held on 14th May. This is an important meeting and just by looking around this site you will see that the village hall management committee is entering a period of change. It is unlikely that anyone living in Allington has not used the village hall at some time or other. It is one of our dominant community buildings and as the notice says “its future is in your hands”.
